Just read a perfect Powerfic story set in Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan universe. This is set pre-series. Lt. Simon Illyan is personal secretary to the Emperor and is always on call. The Emperor interrupts Simon at a crucial moment and then takes an interest when his secretary shows up looking rather debauched. Simon would not dream of saying no to his Emperor. Some coercion but not non-consensual.
Simon here is very young seeming, though judging by his rank is most likely in his mid-20s. Thorougly enjoyed this and recommend it even if you haven't read the books.
Very well put and contains a wonderful quote which I reproduce below.
"Each of us from the moment of his or her birth exists in an environment in which it is easy to do evil and hard to do good.... If I know somebody very well, in ten minutes, if I set my mind to it, I could perhaps say to them things so cruel, so destructive, that they would never forget them for the rest of their life. But could I in ten minutes say things so beautiful, so creative, that they would never forget them?"

is not someone I know personally, though I enjoy her writing and she has been on my friendslist for years.
Today she posted a very painful admission of wrongful past actions. She admits to lying about and slandering her spiritual teacher, Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo (www.tara.org/jetsunma-ahkon-lhamo/biography/), a rare woman Buddhist Lama. Unfortunately, once lies are posted on the internet, they take on a life of their own and cannot easily be called back.
I believe Icarusancalion is taking the right action to try to atone for and ameliorate the damage she has done to the reputation of the Jetsunman. One way we can help her repair some of this damage is to go and read her post here.
The more hits she gets on the post, the higher up the rankings it will appear on searches regarding this subject and the more likely it will be that this retraction will be seen by others.
It is a very difficult thing she is trying to do, and she is putting herself on the line to try rectify this, even going so far as to reveal her real life name in the post. To realise you have made a mistake or done something terrible is one thing, but to admit it to the world is gut wrenching.
Please take the time to look at the post, even if you do not have time to read through the whole thing. If you can, I also urge you to pass this message on and encourage others to read the post.
I have been growing courgettes in my little garden (zuccini to some of you). I had one that must have been half a kilo, it was huge. I went out to pick it this evening for dinner and some little prick had nicked it! Sometimes I hate living on a housing estate. This is even worse than the time someone cut off all the heads of my red tulips.
I have such a bad toothache. Abscessed tooth underneath a crown. Started night before last and I have had about 8 hours sleep total in the last 2 days. On mega dose of antibiotics and just waiting for it to kick in, and stop this hurting so much!
Don't take too long to think about it. List 15 books you've read that will always stick with you. Try to think of 15 books in 15 minutes.
1.Lois Macmaster Bujold – Brothers at Arms (Miles Vorkosigan series)
2.C J Cherryh – Tripoint (Merchanter series)
3.Octavia Butler – Mind of My Mind
4.Anne Rice – Cry to Heaven
5.Marion Zimmer Bradley – Catch Trap
6.J R R Tolkien – Lord of the Rings (Series)
7.Robert A Heinlein – Moon is a Harsh Mistress
8.Jean Auel – Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children series)
9.David R Palmer – Emergence
10.Anne McCaffrey – The Crystal Singer
11.Charles Dickens – A Tale of Two Cities
12.Robert L. Forward – Dragon’s Egg/Star Quake
13.Steven Brust - Jhereg (Vlad Taltos series)
14.Lawrence Block – Hit Man (Keller series)
15.Orson Scott Card – Ender’s Game
I did only spend about 15 minutes thinking up the list then another half an hour or so checking author's names, etc. I stuck to fiction only on this list. I might do another for non-fiction books, though not tonight as it is getting late.
